EOPR – HCI Field Studies Data Collection Completed

The PREP project would like to announce the completion of the data collection phase in the Ergonomics of Electronic Patient Record field studies.
We now have over 30 hours of video data of consultations, along with interviews and photos to analyse in depth. It looks as if we will have a lot to report in the coming months.
EOPR – LOUHI 2011

Dr. Rob Koeling will be presenting a paper entitled ‘Annotating a corpus of clinical text records for learning to recognize symptoms automatically’, at LOUHI 2011: the third international workshop on health document text mining and information analysis.
The paper covers a report on a project to create a corpus of clinical free text records enriched with annotation for symptoms of a particular disease (ovarian cancer). The data that we used, the annotation procedure and the resulting corpus are discussed in detail. The corpus (approximately 192K words) is annotated by three clinicians and a procedure was designed to resolve disagreements. In the next stage in our project this data will be used to train an algorithm to recognize these symptoms automatically in unseen text.

EOPR – Society for Academic Primary Care Conference 2011

EOPR – BMJ Open Publication

We recently published a paper on free text in the recording ovarian cancer in BMJ Open – “Using free text information to explore how and when GPs code a diagnosis of ovarian cancer: an observational study using primary care records of patients with ovarian cancer”, by Rosemary Tate, Alex Martin, Aishath Ali and Jackie Cassell.
The paper was press released with the first edition of the journal, and it was one of the journal’s top downloaded papers in April 2011!

EOPR – The International Implementation of Electronic Health Records (Conference)

EOPR – Art & Science Unite for Ropetackle Festival

Four leading academics from the University of Sussex will take to the stage with musicians, artists, actors and students to share the wonder of science as part of a special festival this month (October 19-30).
University Vice-Chancellor and gastroenterologist Michael Farthing, geneticist Alan Lehmann, health science expert Jackie Cassell and neuroscientist Anil Seth will explain their research to the public with help from artists inspired by aspects of their work at the Art of Life Science festival at the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham (16-30 October 2010).
The series will bring together each scientist with an arts “partner”, with the aim of illustrating and interpreting the science.
PI to the PREP project, Jackie Cassell will be working with students from Northbrook College In Who’s Looking at Your Medical Records? Professor Jackie Cassell, an expert in the use of information technology in the development of healthcare, explains why personal health records are vital in building a picture of health in modern Britain. Students from Northbrook College will provide their own dramatic interpretation of the points Professor Cassell raises in her talk.

EOPR – Wellcome Trust Press Release

Yesterday, the Wellcome Trust published a press release concerning PREP Researcher, Rosemary Tate’s work into delays in Ovarian Cancer referrals. Please see below for link to full text.
“A study of electronic patient records, funded by the Wellcome Trust, suggests that older women with suspected ovarian cancer may be referred by their GPs for investigation later than younger women.
Researchers at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School studied records from the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) and compared recorded diagnoses of ovarian cancer against rates in the UK cancer registries to see whether there was a difference in how older patients are managed by their GP. The results are published today in the ‘British Journal of Cancer’.”…

EOPR – Electronic Health Record Informatics Workshop

Rosemary Tate recently presented at the Electronic Health Record Informatics Workshop, at the University of Maryland. This was hosted by the university’s Human Computer Interaction Lab, and took place on Thursday May 26th 2011. Rosemary’s talk was entitled “Visualising Words: Uncovering Hidden Information in Large UK Primary Care Databases”. Details of the symposium can be seen from the link below.
